Self-Regulation – Tips for teaching your child to remain in a calm state and maintain body control
For more information about Self-Regulation please visit our website at www.1to1therapy.ca/
HOW DO YOU IMPROVE SELF-REGULATION:
- Self-regulation is learned during everyday activities and interactions with others. Young children learn to regulate their thinking, behaviour and emotions.
- Children who engage in intentional self-regulation are able to learn more easily. You can help your child to remain in a calm, alert state by having a predictable routine.
- Routines are very important in order for your child to remain regulated. You should create a schedule to help your child predict what will come next. It is best to always start and end each activity, such as going to sleep, in the same way. Your child will start to predict the next step and participate in your routine.
- Routines to focus on include sleep, feeding and toileting.
- As a parent you can help your child by co-regulating. If you remain in a calm alert state, it will help your child to match your behaviour.
- You can also help your child by learning about his sensory preferences. If your child seeks out movement by running and jumping, you can integrate this sensory preference into your daily routine to help your child remain regulated.
- Explain clear expectations to your child and talk to them prior to new events. Such as, “Today we are going to the doctor. The doctor will look at your tummy. The doctor will not hurt you, Mommy will hold your hand.”
- You can help prepare your child for new situations through play. Pretend play is an excellent way for children to learn and understand new and frightening situations. You can pretend to examine your child using a pretend doctor’s kit.
- Use language to help to identify your child’s feelings. This helps to acknowledge how your child is feeling. For example, “You are scared of the needle.”
- Provide choices for your child so that he has a sense of control. You can provide controlled choices for snacks, clothing and toys. For example, “Do you want the puzzle or the book?”
- Play will help your child to learn self-regulation. Play helps your child to learn to wait and take turns. For example, rolling a ball back and forth.

My autistic baby began pointing at 9 months exactly, much earlier than her two same age cousins btw, but I knew she is on the spectrum since her 7 months of age. She also developed social referencing, joint attention and other skills on time. She also had pretty good receptive language and could bring on request exact toys from another room at 10 months of age.. But my gut feeling still told me she is on the spectrum. It bacame clearly visible with age 😞
The Kardashians have millions of subscribers, views and comments but videos like this have 4 comments. Hmmmm....

My child is autistic.he points object but never looks at us.how to help
Omg he is so cute!!
at 8 months baby is pointing at things? what else baby is doing at 8 months? Playing violin?
Yes it is an early target and make me anxious, most reference said pointing should be around 12 months
Babies should be doing a lot at 8 months! Their brains are growing at an incredible rate. There are many good books on infant and child development that you can reference. Early diagnosis and intervention are key when working with children with developmental issues.
Is you toddler playing violin meanwhile?
thank you for sharing good information
Awesome message; I think distinguishing copying forms and learning from others is so important, especially in a parenting context. I discuss the use of copying & being authentic on my channel, specifically in a parenting context raising my little Ace. Check it out if intrigued - ua-cam.com/video/yNOvHfcxvdc/v-deo.html

Hello, I work for Texas Woman's University in the Disability Services for Students office. One of our professors is using the following video as a part of their curriculum. Can you either upload accurate captions to this video to make them accessible to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people viewing the video, or will you give me permission to caption the video so that we can get this video captioned before the start of the fall semester? We are not able to use the auto-generated captions as they are not ADA-compliant. Thank you
